DESCRIPTION

Two-can solventless epoxy filler, It does not shrink even when applied in thick layers. Low in weight because pf the fine glass bubbles contained. It can be used for filling directly on fibreglass surfaces coated with epoxy systems. The filler has an excellent resistance to seawater and is therefore also recommended for underwater areas of boats.

It is a special non-toxic compound that is able to soften the old coats of antifouling paint but not the gel coat or fibreglass.

PAINTING FIBERGLASS BOATS

HULL

Degrease the surface with our antisilicone solvent SOLVENTE 102 and then sand it with medium sandpaper (n°120 – 150).

Apply one coat of FIBERGLASS PRIMER (about 12 sqm/l) and then after 8 hours apply two coats of SUPER 505, MARLIN TF, or MAXIMA (minimum consumption: 9 sqm/l per coat), waiting another 8 hours between coats. Sanding the surface between the  coats is not needed. In any case it is advisable to test the adhesion of FIBERGLASS PRIMER on the surface.

On hulls already treated with an antifouling, remove the exhausted layer of antifouling with fine sandpaper or ScotchBrite on wet surface. Let dry, then apply two coats of antifouling as above.

TOPSIDE

Degrease and clean thoroughly the surface. If the surface is in good conditions sand with medium-fine sandpaper and then apply two coats of EVERGLOSS enamel without sanding the surface between the coats as long as they are applied between 6 and 8 hours from each other (at 20° C, if unsure it is better to wait longer and water sand the surface with fine sandpaper before the second coat). However, in order to eliminate any eventual imperfection from the first coat, such as dust or insects, it is advisable to slightly water sand the surface with fine sandpaper (n.240-280).

If the surface happens to be in particularly bad conditions, it is advisable to sand the surface with coarse sand paper (n.100-120), and then adjust any visible defect with our EPOXY FILLER directly on the gel-coat. After that proceed as follows:

INNER NON VISIBLE PARTS

Sand the surface with coarse sandpaper (n.80-100), and then apply one or two coats of EPOGEL. This product has also the property of stopping the bad smells of new fibreglass.

ANTIOSMOSIS TREATMENT

Sandblast the hull with coarse sandpaper, until the gel-coat is completely removed, if it is covered with blisters. In case a few  are present among the inner layers as well, these must be opened with a chisel one by one. However if such bubbles are too many to be singularly treated, the first layer of the hull must be completely removed. The easiest way of carrying out this task is to use a large carpenter chisel with a handle of about 50 cm. Instead, in case the gel-coat does not show any bubbles, or only small cracks are present, it will be enough to roughen the surface with light sandblasting or sanding with coarse sandpaper.

Wash thoroughly the surface with fresh water. Let it dry for at least two or three months. If the weather happens to be particularly wet, preventing the surface from drying properly, an electric dehumifier can be used, wrapping the hull with a plastic sheet, as much hermetically as possible. It has been noticed that during drying time, even though the hull was previously washed properly with fresh water, it can keep on expelling a dark liquid (acetic acid or other compounds derived from the deterioration of polyester resins) from inside the fibreglass up to the surface. Such oozing of the surface is particularly noticed in humid weather conditions, when small dark spots appear on the surface. In order to eliminate these substances from the surface, it will be necessary to wash the hull with fresh water 2 or 3 times more during drying time, carefully drying the surface with a cloth after each wash. It is particularly important to wash the surface also one or two days before starting the treatment with BARRIER. This is because the substances oozing from the fibreglass affect adhesion and moreover, being water soluble, they would attract water from the inside, creating the possibility for blisters to form.

Apply one coat of PRIMEPOX using a brush, this product has a very good adhesion on both fibreglass and the gel-coat. As soon as PRIMEPOX is completely dry, (this will take approximately one or two days), sand the surface and apply two or three coats of BARRIER TIX or GREEN. The two coats must be applied within 24 hours from each other when the temperature is about 18°C. If the temperature is higher the product will dry faster and therefore the maximum interval of time between each coat must be of maximum 16 hours or even less. Moreover the quantity of BARRIER to be applied when restoring the hull is of 0,5 litres for each square metre of surface. Applying such quantity of BARRIER we will obtain a protective film of 450 microns, enough for a total impermeability, superior to the impermeability of traditional gel-coat based on polyester resins.

Apply one coat of FIBERGLASS PRIMER after sanding the surface with medium sandpaper (n.120-150) and then apply two coats of antifouling SUPER 505, MARLIN TF, MARLIN CF or MAXIMA, insisting with a third coat on corners and rudder.

FILLING WORK

In case the hull needs some filling work, this will be done with our EPOXY FILLER, which is very easy to apply and sand afterwards. It must be applied after the first coat of PRIMEPOX or between the BARRIER coats, after sanding the surface. Our EPOXY FILLER  features the same protective power as BARRIER, therefore, when needed, the whole hull can be covered with a coat of EPOXY FILLER.

Application of the last coat of BARRIER with a knife: BARRIER’s hardener (component B) is also available in paste, this version is called A SPATOLA and is very easy to be applied, allowing an extremely smooth finishing, without risks of drippings or strains
